Education

BSc 1965 (major in craft ceramics), PhD 1970 (both University of NSW). Originally studied ceramics with Ivan McMeekin. Active in ceramics now for 57 years.

 

Exhibitions

27 Solo in Australia in NSW, Vic, WA, ACT; also in USA. 45 group international including China, Germany, USA, Japan, Singapore, Italy, and New Zealand. Includes Delinquent Angel toured Italy, Japan, Singapore and Australia), various in Germany, Japan including Creative Australia in Osaka. About 100 group in Australia, many national survey shows, in all states, venues include NGV, Powerhouse and Customs House Sydney, MAGNT, Craft Victoria, Fremantle Arts Centre, Shepparton Art Gallery and various regional galleries, many commercial galleries.

Awards

Winner of 6 national awards in ceramics competitions in Australia including Gold Coast Award 1989; winner of Distinction Award international saltglaze competition, Koblenz, Germany 2002, and Society for American Archaeology Award for Ceramic Studies 2000.

Writing

Author of the books Beyond Short Street (a memoir); Traditional Palestinian Pottery; Author of The Art of Woodfire (Mansfield Press, 2011) and two books on archaeological ceramics. Other writing  includes more than 70 articles in Ceramics Art and Perception, Pottery in Australia, Craft Arts, Ceramic Review(UK), Ceramics Monthly and Studio Potter (USA), Neue Keramik (Germany)and other journals; catalog essays in Australia and USA, exhibition reviews, book reviews; over 20 conference papers published, and 30 delivered in Australian national ceramics conferences, and in USA . Editorial Advisor, Ceramics Art and Perception.

 

Teaching, Public Lectures, Workshops

Teaching Canberra School of Art 1980-84, Monash University 1985 - 2004. Over 70 postgraduates (MA, MFA, MVA, PhD) graduated from Monash. Many lectures, workshops, residencies in Australia (Qld, Vic, NSW, SA) and in USA (Tennessee, Illinois, North Carolina, Utah, Oregon) and China. Panel moderato/chair at many conferences, speaker at many more, including Australian National conferences, and Woodfire conferences in Australia, USA, Germany).

 

Curated  

Australian Woodfire Survey  1996,  2005 Australian Woodfire Survey.  Conference organisation includes Woodfire ’86 (funding from Australia Council) which inspired many later events; and consulted on International Woodfire Iowa USA 1999, advisor for Encrusted 2006 Australian Woodfire Survey and many other woodfire events.
